You hurry down the darkened street, your heels tapping against the cobblestone, wanting to get home before the drunkards stumble their way out their pubs. Your father, Governor Swann, is going to be livid with you for returning home so late, especially unaccompanied. You're his youngest daughter, Elizabeth Swann your elder sister. You're the rebellious child, having decided early on in your life that there are more important things than fancy gowns and tea time. You're more rowdy than Elizabeth, more rambunctious, more irresponsible, more reckless. You just want to be as free as a bird, doing what you want, when you want, without constantly being watched by guards. That's why this evening, you escaped and quickly lost the guards to do your own thing. You can't be yourself with them breathing down your neck day in and day out. You know you're going to hear it from your father when you get home, but the couple of hours of freedom were worth it. You quicken your step just a little more. When you pass an alley, a hand reaches out and grabs your arms, pulling you to a stop. You scream as you’re pulled against someone's chest. You place your hands against their chest and then freeze. You look up and immediately smile. "James!" You exclaim. "Y/N, what are you doing walking by yourself? At night time? Do you know what your father would say?" Commodore James Norrington asks sternly. You grimace. "I'm expecting to hear it when I get home." You frown. You sigh. "Come on, you better walk me home so at least my father knows someone he trusts walked me home." You turn to go, but James tugs you back against him. “Hold on, hold on. There's something I have to do first." He says, before sinking his hands into your hair and kissing you deeply. You sigh and wrap your arms around him, kissing him back. A long moment later he pulls his head back, smiling. “Hi." You smile up at him, warmth flooding your body. “Hi." He murmurs. He hugs you. "I've missed you so much today." He whispers into your hair. You close your eyes, resting your head against his chest. "I've missed you, James." You whisper back. James and you are in love. In any other circumstance, it would have been the best thing. However, your father has chosen Elizabeth, your level headed sister, to marry James instead. While there has been no proposal, it is already arranged that they marry. You are set to marry someone who is more suited for you and your personality. But you don't want to marry anyone else. You want to marry James. James and you keep your love a secret, most of time acting indifferent towards each other. But on some nights, like tonight, you meet each other in secret so that you can be alone together. “How long, James? How long until you propose to Elizabeth?" You ask quietly. James's hand stills on your back. "I've been trying to avoid it as much as I can, Y/N. Your father isn't exactly making it easy. He wants me to marry your sister as soon as I can. But I can't...you know I can't..." His voice cracks and he holds you tighter. "I won't lose you." He whispers. You look up at him, your eyebrows drawn. "Do we even have a choice?" You choke out. He stares down at you, worry filling his eyes. He opens his mouth to say otherwise but then shuts it. You cup his face, tears filling your eyes. “How can we possibly be together when we're both set to marry different people? How does that work?" You whisper, your voice breaking. James sighs deeply and closes his eyes, pulling you back into his arms. James walks you home that night. As soon as you enter the door, you spot your father pacing the hall like a madman. When he spots you, he stops, the worry vanishing from his face, fury taking over instead. He rushes over to you and grabs your hands. "Y/N, where have you been?! I've been worried sick!" He admonishes. “I'm sorry, father. Escaping from the guards was irresponsible and reckless." You say, bowing your head. “Good thing Commodore Norrington found you when he did, or else you might never have come home." Your father says, nodding appreciatively at James. “It's my duty to look after your daughter, sir. Both of your daughters." James says. Your stomach twists. “Now you go on upstairs, Y/N, and go to sleep. We will finish this conversation in the morning." Your father says, guiding you to the stairs. "Meanwhile, the Commodore and I have some important business to discuss." He murmurs, turning to James. You glance at James over your shoulder as you ascend the stairs and he looks at you worriedly, before turning his eyes on your father. ——— You take tea with Elizabeth the next morning. She's staring into her cup, distracted. She looks like she hasn't slept a wink, dark circles under her eyes. "Sister." You say worriedly, touching her arm. She jumps and looks up at you, as if realizing you were sitting next to her this whole time. "Oh." She smiles. "I'm sorry, Y/N. I-I was lost in thought, I guess." She murmurs. Your eyebrows furrow. "Is everything okay?" She nods and then starts shaking her head, heaving a heavy sigh. She sets her tea cup aside and buries her face in her hands, however not shedding a tear. "I don't know what to do, Y/N." She murmurs. “About what?" “About Commodore Norrington." You straighten and your eyebrows shoot up your forehead. "Commodore Norrington?" You bite your lip. “I heard father and the Commodore talking last night. Father told him that he has to marry me, and that the proposal has to happen very soon. Father can't understand why the Commodore is taking so long to ask me." Elizabeth explains. She lifts her head and looks at you miserably. "I don't want to marry him, Y/N. Don't get me wrong, I like James. But I don't love him." You squint at her. "Are-are you in love with someone else?" She nods. "I am." She whispers. Your eyes go wide. "Who?!" You exclaim loudly. You cough and lean forward. "I mean, who?" You say softly. "William Turner." She breathes. Your jaw drops. "But-but-but-" You sputter. “Father would never let me. He would never let me marry Will." She whispers horribly. She leans back in her chair, slumping as much as she can with her corset. "I don't know what to do. I love Will so much. My heart breaks at the thought of marrying the Commodore." You almost laugh at the irony, but you remain cool and collected. "So what are you going to do?" She shakes his head. "I have no idea." She murmurs. ——— A couple of weeks later your family attends a promotion ceremony for officers of the British Royal Navy. Elizabeth stands next to you, waving her fan wildly. “Relax, it's going to be okay." You whisper to her. “This is the day. I know it, Y/N. He's going to propose to me." She whispers furiously, scared. You say nothing, a sinking feeling in your chest. James and you have barely talked these past two weeks, both of you extremely busy. You never thought that that night you evaded your escorts would be your last night alone with James. Your heart cracks at the thought. Once the ceremony is over and everyone is celebrating, James walks over to your father, who's standing beside Elizabeth and you. Elizabeth grips your arm tightly, paling. "Governor Swann, I would like to ask your permission to marry your daughter." He states. Elizabeth sways and this time you grip onto her to steady her. Your father beams proudly. "Of course I give you permission, Commodore. There is no one else I'd want to marry my daughter." He says. James smiles and nods before turning towards Elizabeth and you. Elizabeth stares at him, her eyes wide in fear. Your heart is breaking. "Elizabeth..." James starts. He swallows. "If you'd excuse me." He says, taking her hands off of your arms. James slides in hands down your arms until he holds your hands. Your eyes widen in shock and your jaw drops. “Y/N, I'm so in love with you. I never thought I'd marry for love, but here we are. I love you, and I want to be your husband. I want you to be my wife. I want to grow old with you and live my life by your side." “Oh, James." You whisper, tears flooding your eyes so fast that you can't blink them away fast enough. “Oh, Y/N." Elizabeth squeaks out happily. “Will you marry me, Y/N?" James asks. “Of course I will!" You cry, throwing your arms around him. He holds you tightly against him as Elizabeth laughs in relief, shock, and happiness. “What-what is going on?!" Your father sputters. James sets you down and looks at your father. "Sir, I asked for your permission to marry your daughter. I never specified which daughter." He says. You can't stop the smile that spreads across your face. "I have been in love with Y/N for so long now. I never wanted to marry Elizabeth, I've only ever wanted Y/N." He finishes. Your father looks between James and you. "Is this what you want?" He asks you hesitantly. “I never wanted anything more." You admit with a shrug. You look up at James, smiling. "He is the water to my fire, father." You murmur. James smiles down at you and caresses your cheek. "I love you." He whispers, before kissing you deeply. You smile and kiss him back. Elizabeth goes to your father. He wraps an arm around her waist. "You're not too heartbroken over this, are you, Elizabeth?" He asks. “Father, I couldn't be more happy." She laughs. She catches Will's eye in the crowd and smiles. He offers her a shy smile back. [THE END] I hope you liked it!
